Plateau’s Loss Gives NPFL Title To Rivers As Race For CAF Competitions Remains Stiff

June 27, (THEWILL) – In front of the new Super Eagles coach, Jose Peseiro, Plateau United lost 2-1 to Akwa United on Saturday, in Uyo, with the unexpected loss handing the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) title to Rivers United with three games to go.

Rivers United, who are on 71 points, now have a commanding 10-point lead over Plateau United, with their 61 points, after 35 games and the best Plateau United can get is a second-place finish to Stanley Eguma’s club.

For long periods during the 2021/2022 campaign, Fidelis Ilechukwu’s Plateau United had been chasing Rivers United and they seemed prepared to keep up the race to the end of the season, but they lost steam and were unable to maintain their momentum after David Onovo’s goal and Leo Ezekiel’s dramatic winner made Jesse Akila’s equaliser in the first minute of the second half meaningless.

While Plateau United maintains their second place, Remo Stars are third with 53 points. Kwara United’s hopes of competing in continental football next season was dealt a blow with the 4-nil drubbing they suffered against Niger Tornadoes, as they remain in fifth place with 52 points. Sunshine Stars and Akwa United are joint seventh on 51 points apiece.

The contest for places in the Confederation of African Football competitions will go down the wire as the remaining three games present third-place Remo Stars, Enugu Rangers (4th), Enyimba International (5th) and Kwara United (6th) a fighting chance to claim qualification.
