May 27, (THEWILL) – On Thursday evening in Texas, United States, Portuguese manager, Jose Peseiro, oversaw his first training session as substantive Super Eagles coach.
The former manager of Venezuela and Saudi Arabia, initially stated that his immediate goal is to win the Africa Cup of Nations in 2023. But, his charges have a long way to go to reach that goal. They must qualify from a group that includes Sierra Leone, Guinea Bissau, and Mauritius.
During the workout, international players Alex Iwobi, William Troost-Ekong, Calvin Bassey, Joe Aribo, Semi Ajayi, Ola Aina, and Moses Simon were sighted going through their sequences. On Friday, more Super Eagles invitees are expected before the team’s opening encounter against Mexico on Saturday, May 28 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Peseiro remarked on how delighted he was with the players’ energy and desire to workout, following their long flight to the United States: “It’s a pleasure starting work today with the training, because I started before to practice with the national team. And you start to play to win the Africa Cup of Nations, it’s the first step.
“I’m happy because these guys came from a long trip, but they showed today the enthusiasm, the motivation and they trained with happiness. All of them know we want to win the AFCON, it’s being held in 2023, but we must start today to improve our spirit. The guys were fantastic.”
