May 30, (THEWILL) – Sergio Perez won his first Formula One race of the 2022 season at a rain-shortened Monaco Grand Prix.

Rain delayed the race on Sunday, allowing the drivers to complete only 64 of the 77 scheduled laps before the two-hour time restriction expired. Perez took advantage of Ferrari’s pit stop blunders to stay in front and secure the victory for Red Bull Racing.

Carlos Sainz of Ferrari finished second, just a tenth of a second behind the leader, while teammate and pole winner Charles Leclerc finished fourth. Max Verstappen finished in third position, ending his three-race winning streak.

With Leclerc and Sainz starting on the front row after qualifying, Ferrari was in a strong position coming into the race. After looking good early on the wet track, drama ensued on the 22nd lap due to miscommunication between Ferrari and Leclerc.

Perez took over the lead as the communication slip saw Leclerc slip from first to fourth. Following that, there were a several stoppages, including Mick Schumacher’s crash. It meant Schumacher, and his Haas teammate Kevin Magnussen, finished last.

Verstappen remained in first place in the driver standings, with Leclerc in second and Perez, third. On June 12, the Formula One season will resume with the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
