December 09, (THEWILL) – Pele is undergoing “continuing” treatment for a colon tumor and has been admitted to the hospital.

Pele is in stable condition, according to the Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein in Sao Paulo, and should be released within the next few days.

As THEWILL reported, the 81-year-old three-time FIFA World Cup winner underwent surgery on his colon on September 4 to remove a tumor. After being released from the hospital on September 30, he released a statement on Instagram that read:

“When the path is difficult, celebrate each step of the journey. Focus on your happiness. It’s true that I can’t jump anymore, but these past few days, I’ve been punching the air more times than usual. I am so happy to be back at home.

“I want to thank the entire Albert Einstein Hospital team, who made my stay a pleasant one, with a humane and very affectionate welcome. Thanks also to all of you, who from afar, make my life complete with so many messages of love.”

Last month, Pele posted an update saying he was feeling “better every day”.

After his first release from the hospital, the football legend, who played for Brazilian side Santos and the New York Cosmos in the United States during his club career, was due to receive chemotherapy treatments.

The gracious 81-year-old has worked as a humanitarian and served as Brazil’s Minister of Sports from 1995 to 1998 after retiring from active football in 1977.
