Paralympian Paul Kehinde Dies Aged 33

November 19, (THEWILL) – Paul Kehinde, an Olympic gold medallist and current world record holder in the men’s 65kg weightlifting division, has died after a brief illness. He was 33 years old.

Kehinde, also known as Olumi Agberin, was a serial world record breaker, Commonwealth Games champion, and previous world number one in para-powerlifting.

THEWILL recalls that Kehinde won a silver medal at the 2011 World Championships, a gold medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, and a gold medal at the 2015 All African Games, setting an African weightlifting record of 214 kg.

Olumi Agberin also won gold at the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games, where he broke the world record twice with lifts of 218kg and 220kg. Then, he added the gold medal at the Mexico World Championship as he broke another world record with a lift of 220kg.

Kehinde also took the gold medal at the 2018 FAZZA World Para-Powerlifting Championship. In like fashion, he ended up breaking another world record with a lift of 220kg.

He was also a gold medalist at the African Championships in 2018.
