January 09, (THEWILL) – Napoli’s Victor Osimhen has tested negative for COVID-19 and will return to Italy soon with the likelihood of playing club football again for the I Partenopei soonest.
THEWILL recalls the unsettling contest between Nigeria’s football governing body and the club about Osinhem’s participation in the TotalEnergies 2021 African Cup of Nations (AFCON), which ended after the striker tested positive for COVID-19.
Consequently, he had to withdraw from the AFCON on the eve of camping. Super Eagles coach Augustine Eguavoen defended the late substitution of Osinhem with approval from the Confederation of African Football (CAF), as the player’s numerous fitness and health issues were not optimal for the competition.
After isolating in Nigeria, the former Under-17 international is on course to return to active football after Napoli shared on Twitter the news that their 23-year-old talisman man will return to Italy having tested negative for COVID-19.
THEWILL recalls that since suffering a facial injury in Napoli’s Serie A loss to Inter Milan in November Ka last year, Osimhen has not played in Luciano Spalletti’s side.
All that can change when the Neapolitans visit Bologna on January 17, when a grateful Spalletti can introduce the Nigerian international back to the team with the hope that his time off the game has done nothing to his form earlier this season.
