SAN FRANCISCO, August 01, (THEWILL) – Edo State governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, on Thursday declared that Nigerians now have a better choice in the newly-registered All Progressives Congress (APC).

The governor made the declaration after he joined a special delegation from the Anglican Communion, led by Primate Nicholas Okoh, to condole with the First Family on the death of the foster mother of the First Lady, Mrs Charity Obah, at the Aso Villa in Abuja.

He said by virtue of the APC registration, he is “now a member of APC,” adding “ I will take my registration card. I will register in accordance with the constitution.”

Describing the development as a plus for democracy, Oshiomhole, said: “For me, it is all about democracy and I believe you the media and myself in my former calling and even now, we are now activists struggling to entrench and deepen democracy for the good of the country. It is all about battle of ideas, battle of programmes and the welfare of our people. And if you have two viable parties that are capable of engaging, then the people will have the basis for genuine and meaningful choice,” Oshiomhole said.

He added: “I think it is for every Nigerian to encourage. When people know that people have a choice, all of us in public office are better guided. When I know that there is opposition in my state who could take power if I don’t do what the people want, it helps me to behave more responsibly and everybody in office behaves with the fear of the electorate in heart and we have good governance and that enhances the pace of development.

“I think it’s good news for all Nigerians and in a way it also reinforces the independence of INEC. That INEC is able to make such a decision. If you ask me, I think it enhances the credibility of INEC in the eyes of the Nigerian public. It’s nice for the country.”

While condoling with the President and the First Lady, Oshiomhole, who said he had earlier sent a letter to that effect, said: “I know neither my letter and presence can change the matter. There is nothing anyone can say that can vacate the pain of a loved one but it is a reassurance that we care. We pray nothing of this will happen. My mother would have loved to come because she appreciates the pain you go through. As believers, we are not supposed to question God. He creates and can take away at any time. We have to accept his judgement as final.”

On his part, Okoh said the Anglican Communion had come to pray for the First Family, citing that all men of God cited in the Bible lived long but “the bottom line is that they died.”

According to Okoh, who also presented a letter of condolence from the Anglican church to the First Family, “ The joy of your mum’s death is that she left a legacy that all can see. We in the church believe that death is inevitable.

“God will give you grace, as you spend time to look after the state God will look after your own. Nigerians believe you are a superman and can’t have problems.”

In his response, President Jonathan expressed gratitude to them, saying his in-law played a great “role to support her children,’” stressing that her demise “is very painful.”

According to President Jonathan, “Though she died, we have brothers and sisters who will continue to support us.”
A delegation led by Kaduna State governor, Ramalan Yero, also paid a condolence visit to the First Family.
