BEVERLY HILLS, January 27, (THEWILL) – Galatasaray SK, the Turkish professional football club based on the European sides of the popular Turkish city of Istanbul, has obtained the signature of Nigeria international winger Henry Onyekuru. The 23-year-old signed a six-month loan with an option to buy with the Lions from French Ligue 1 giants AS Monaco.

The Nigerian professional player hopes to stay with Galatasaray for the foreseeable future having previously helped the club clinch the Turkish Super Lig title and Turkish Cup in the 2018/19 season as their winger and hopes to repay their unflinching support for him.

Speaking with the club’s website, Onyekuru said: “First of all, I am very happy to be here again. I want to have a season where we can achieve the goals of the club, with plenty of goals and make everyone proud.

“I’m hoping to stay here longer. I spoke to our president, vice president and technical director, and they expressed their confidence in me. As always, I’m willing to give 100 percent.

“As I said before, my goal is to achieve more success with the club, win more trophies and make our fans proud. Hopefully, we will win both the league and the Turkish Cup,” he added.

The relationship between the Turkish side and Onyekuru has been long-running as this is his third loan spell with Galatasaray. He was with them for the first time in the 2018/2019 season on loan from English Premiership club Everton FC.

The Nigerian later joined Monaco from Everton in a permanent deal in August 2019 but he was again loaned out to Galatasaray midway through the 2019/2020 campaign to allow him get more playing time.

His struggles for game time are behind these loan agreements and the former KAS Eupen player is going through that rough patch again at Monaco this season. He has only managed just four Ligue 1 appearances for Monaco which has necessitated rejoining the Lions of Galatasaray.

The 22-time record Turkish champions Galatasaray have not had it smooth this season. They currently sit third behind bitter rivals Besiktas and Fenerbahce in the league standings. Onyekuru’s loan is in a bid to bolster their attacking options and the Super Eagles winger aims to repay their faith in him.

Hopefully, this third time might be the charm to change his career for the best. His previous success and performance in Turkey earned him a spot in Nigeria’s squad at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), though his first cap was in a friendly win against Togo in June 2017.

But Onyekuru’s single game in AFCON came as a late substitute in the semi-final defeat to Algeria, an experience which left him both disappointed and determined to reestablish himself at club level and improve his chances of better representation at the international level. He has netted twice in 12 international matches for Nigeria.
