Onuachu Replaces Injured Simon In Super Eagles Squad

SAN FRANCISCO, November 02, (THEWILL) – Paul Onuachu, Nigerian striker for Genk in the Belgian Pro League, has been called up to the Nigerian Super Eagles’ squad ahead of their 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against the Leone Stars of Sierra Leone.

The invitation for Genk’s leading marksman is the second time he will be drafted into the team to replace an unavailable player originally included on the roster.

In the last international break, Onuachu was summoned at short notice by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for the friendlies with the Desert Foxes of Algeria and Carthage Eagles of Tunisia after striker Victor Osimhen was unable to travel because Napoli players were ordered into quarantine following three positive COVID-19 cases.

Now, according to the NFF on Monday, the ex-Midtjylland forward has been called up again as the previously invited winger for French Ligue 1 side Nantes Moses Simon is ruled out injured.

Simon was substituted after only 25 minutes of Nantes’ 3-0 defeat to PSG on Saturday night due to an adductor injury.

The 26-year-old Onuachu, who has been capped seven times by Nigeria, will take his place in the squad.

The Super Eagles, who top Group L of the AFCON qualifiers, take on Sierra Leone at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City on Friday, November 13 with a reverse fixture at the Siaka Stevens Stadium in Freetown four days later.
