September 19, (THEWILL) – Super Eagles forward Paul Onuachu was back on the scoresheet with a late winning goal in Racing Genk’s 2-1 win over Saint-Truiden on Sunday.

As THEWILL reported, Onuachu was man of the match in Genk’s Europa League win over Rapid Vienna on Thursday night, after he scored the winning and only goal of the game.

On Sunday, he began the day on the bench with coach John van den Brom starting a front three of Mike Tresor, Ike Ugbo and Junya Ito.

Genk were not productive upfront in the manner that they had been previously. The struggle for the visitors became more onerous when Yuma Suzuki put St. Truiden ahead in the third minute of added time of the first half. There were no other goals as the hosts went into the break leading by that late goal.

The second half resumed with Genk struggling to create anything upfront. At the hour mark, van den Brom introduced Onuachu, replacing Ugbo. The 27-year-old Nigerian immediately increased the pressure on the hosts’ defense as soon as he came off the bench.

The overall tone of the game picked up the pace as Onuachu began to disturb the St. Truiden backline with his imposing physical structure and fresh legs. Thirteen minutes after he came on, Genk equalised through a John Paintsil long-range shot.

The momentum that had been building for Genk turned fully in Genk’s favour as the visitors played for the win. This ascendancy carried on until the 83rd minute, when the partnership between Ito and Onuachu produced the winner.

Onuachu has now scored four goals in six league games this season and six in ten matches overall. It places the Super Eagles striker on course to match last season’s tally of 35 goals in all competitions.
