August 01, (THEWILL) – In an unfortunate occurrence in Kwara State, Olufunke Ogunsuyi, the erstwhile Head Coach of kickboxing in Ogun State, was found dead in her hotel room on Saturday while in Ilorin to participate in the Kwara Zonal and Invitational Kickboxing Championship for the year.

Ogunsuyi, a former champion in the sport, had been hale and hearty when she officiated in the competition and also fielded two athletes in her capacity as head coach.

But she did not arrive at the stadium by 12 noon as scheduled, when all the other officials were supposed to converge for the commencement of the final ceremony.

Those who tried to reach her through her phone were unsuccessful as calls to her number were neither picked nor returned.

A search immediately commenced and eventually led to her hotel room where they confirmed she had not emerged from since she returned.

Organisers and some participants and officials decided that it was best to break through to ascertain why and upon forceful entry, the corpse of the former kickboxing champion was discovered in the room. Thereupon, the body was taken to the General Hospital, Ilorin, where she was finally confirmed dead, at about 4 p.m.

The remains of the deceased, who was a native of Ijebu-Ode in Ogun State, were thereafter deposited at the mortuary of the Kwara General Hospital, Ilorin. On Sunday, there are plans to transfer her body home to Ogun State.

To enable that transfer, the Ogun State Sports Council contacted members of her family and some of her friends to relay the unfortunate development and facilitate the means to bring her body back to her home and her family.

When the news broke, Alhaji Ali Durotoye, the Director of Grassroots Sports Development at the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development (FMYSD), immediately went to the general hospital where she was confirmed dead. He arrived in the company of several top sports administrators.

As a mark of respect for one of their coaches and a former champion, the Kickboxing Championship organisers postponed Saturday’s final of the competition to Sunday.
