SAN FRANCISCO, December 05, (THEWILL) – Frenchman Patrick Vieira has been relieved of his duties as Olympique Gymnaste Club Nice head coach. His term at the Allianz Riviera lasted two-and-a-half years and this sack follows a run of five straight defeats in all competitions.

A downtown in results for the team and accusations that there was no recognisable pattern of football in their gameplay meant that the 44-year-old was facing an increasing barrage of criticism. The club decided to act now than allow him see out the contract which was due to expire at the end of the season.

Recent results appear to justify the criticisms. On Sunday, the team at the bottom of the Ligue 1 table Dijon FCO, without a victory to their name after 11 matches, beat 11th placed Nice 3-1 at the Allianz Riviera. Then, it got worse on Thursday.

Another home defeat, 3-2, this time to Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League, proved to be the final straw.

The World Cup winner took over at Nice in 2018 replacing the Swiss Lucien Favre who was leaving to take over at Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga. The next season, 2018/2019, Vieira led Nice to seventh position and last season to fifth, qualifying them for the Europa League group stages.

This season has been different. Domestically, the team continues to wobble and struggling in the Europa League has not yielded sufficient enough results to make it to the knockout stages. They sit third in Group C with only one win after five matches.

The statement from the club confirming the decision to part ways with the manager on Friday, read:

“Patrick Vieira, who joined the club in the summer of 2018, is no longer head coach of OGC Nice, effective immediately.

“In a meeting conducted after last night’s match, the Nice Board informed Patrick Vieira of their decision to end their collaboration.

“The Rouge et Noir club has decided to appoint Adrien Ursea as head coach of the club’s professional first team, as of today.

“The Swiss-Romanian tactician, who was assistant coach to Patrick Vieira and, before that, Lucien Favre, will take charge of his first Nice match as head coach this Sunday with the trip to Reims.

“Patrick Vieira put all his heart and professionalism into his service for OGC Nice over the last two and a half years of their collaboration.

“The Nice board sincerely thanks the former France international for his commitment and dedication to the development of the club and wishes him every future success in his coaching career.”

The ex-manager of Major League Soccer side New York City before switching to France, Vieira was also linked with the vacant manager position at Arsenal, given his association with the Gunners, before Mikel Arteta’s appointment last December.
