November 22, (THEWILL) – On yet another frustrating World Cup night, Robert Lewandowski missed a penalty and his Poland team was forced to settle for a goalless draw in their opening Group C matchup against Mexico.
Guillermo Ochoa, the goalkeeper for Mexico, graciously denied the Barcelona striker the opportunity to score his first World Cup goal after referee Chris Beath granted the spot-kick following a VAR assessment.
In a sparse match against Mexico, Poland provided little else. Mexico was far more fluid going forward, especially down the flanks, and was cheered on by a boisterous crowd at the scintillating Stadium 974.
Hirving Lozano, as was expected, served as Mexico’s primary offensive outlet in the game and he posed the bigger threat for the Polish backline, but neither he nor Lewandowski was able to breach either defence in 90 minutes of football.
On Saturday, both teams will be back in action. After suffering a shocking loss to Saudi Arabia, Argentina will hope to get their World Cup challenge back on track against Mexico, while Poland faces Herve Renard’s upbeat Saudi team.
