OBA, YPP Unveil AIG Amba As Senator Akpan’s Running Mate

August 6, (THEWILL) – The gubernatorial candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) in Akwa Ibom State, Senator Bassey Albert Akpan, has unveiled AIG Asuquo Amba (rtd), as his running mate in the 2023 gubernatorial election.

The event took place Friday evening, a day after Senator Akpan won the fresh primary election conducted by the party in line with the provision of the 2022 Electoral Act, to become the candidate of the party in the state.

The brief ceremony which took place at the state party secretariat, along Nsikak Eduok Avenue, Uyo, had in attendance YPP state chairman, executive members and party faithfuls.

Speaking, the Governoship candidate said that the ticket is complete with his running mate, AIG Amba (rtd) and assured that their government will be loyal to the people of the state from the grassroots to the top, since it will be rooted in true democracy.

Akpan, who stressed that his government will focus primarily on “3Rs”: that is to Recover, Reconcile and Reposition the state, described his unveiled deputy as “a man who has served Nigeria meritoriously and with passion.

“He is a true Akwa Ibomite who did his job for Nigeria in the Nigerian Police Force, with an incontrovertible Curriculum Vitae”, Akpan stated.

The English graduate from the prestigious University of Lagos, hails from Urueoffong Uruko Local Government Area of the state.

According to his profile as read at the event, he did his compulsory national service in 1985, and was retained as a lecturer in the University of Lagos before he was enlisted into the Nigerian Police in 1986.

He served as commissioner of police in different states including Bayelsa, Ekiti and in charge of counter- terrorism at the force headquarters before he was promoted to the rank of an Assistant Inspector General.

In his acceptance speech, Amba, who described the Governoship candidate as “the legend of our time”, expressed appreciation to the entire party structure for having faith in him.

“As a “spare tyre”, my loyalty is already 100% to the incoming Governor, the party and Akwa Ibom people.”

In his opening remarks, the state chairman of the party, Apostle Nyeneime Andy, had explained that AIG Amba was picked after due consultations with relevant authorities within the party.

He expressed happiness that within just 24 hours after the candidate emerged for the party, a running mate was produced, saying it was an indication that the party is organised and principled.

Apostle Andy, however, announced the plan by the party in the state to commence a unit by unit visitation in readiness to form the next Government in the state.
