No Plan To Shut Down UNIMAID, Says Vice Chancellor

BEVERLY HILLS, CA, March 16, (THEWILL) – The fear of a possible shut down of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) in Borno State has been doused.

The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Mala Daura, said on Sunday that the authorities of the school was not having. such plan.

The Vice Chancellor however advised students not to flee the campus in fear, saying the authority has put all measures in place to ensure their security.

Daura said the rumour of possible attack of the campus by Boko Haram was “unfounded and misplaced”, assuring that the institution is safe as the authority has put in place security measures to protect the campus and its inhabitants.

Giving the assurance in a statement by the institution’s Chief Information Officer, Malam Ahmed Tanko Mohammed, the vice chancellor asked students not to flee but settle down for their academic activities.

He also appealed to parents and guardians not to fear, assuring that their children are safe.

“There is no cause for alarm. The university authority is working in collaboration with security agencies to ensure security for the entire university community. We have quite a good number of security personnel around the university and as such, parents and guardian should know their children are safe.

“We have no intention to close the university as academic activities continue unhindered. We urged the students to continue their lecture without fear because the security situation in Maiduguri is now calm and normalcy is returning,” the statement said..

Hundreds of students were said to have fled the university following the attack on an Army barrack in Maiduguri as rumour was rife about planned Boko Haram attack on the campus.

Two persons were also reportedly killed on Friday when stray bullet from Rocket Propelled Grenade hit some buildings in the university, a development which fueled speculations that the insurgents have invaded the campus and detonated improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
