No Compensation For Unvaccinated Players Who Miss Games Due To Vaccine Mandates – NBA

September 29, (THEWILL) – As the debate over vaccinations against COVID-19 rage on in American basketball, the NBA announced on Wednesday that unvaccinated NBA players in New York City and San Francisco will not be compensated for games missed due to local COVID-19 vaccine restrictions that ban them from playing.

Mike Bass, the NBA spokesman said in a statement to the media on the third day of training camps: “Any player who elects not to comply with local vaccination mandates will not be paid for games that he misses.”

The announcement came just one day after the NBA stated its desire for a vaccine mandate for its players, citing the players’ union as a stumbling barrier to achieving 100% vaccination for its members.

Bass continued: “A vaccine mandate for NBA players would need an agreement with the Players Association. The NBA has made these proposals, but the players’ union has rejected any vaccination requirement.”

Removing such compensations would cost Brooklyn Nets’ Kyrie Irving $300,000 every game if he is not inoculated. Andrew Wiggins of the Golden State Warriors, who has not been immunised, is in a similar boat.

However, NBA referees, unlike the players, must be completely immunised for the forthcoming season. The league issued the following statement regarding referees:

“The NBA announced today that it has reached an agreement with the National Basketball Referees Association requiring vaccinations for all referees working NBA games during the 2021-22 season.

“The agreement specifies that all referees must be fully vaccinated unless they have a religious or medical exemption. The referees have also agreed to take any recommended boosters. Any referee who does not get vaccinated and is not exempt will be ineligible to work games.”

In addition to referees, the league is demanding vaccinations for all team and arena workers who have regular contact with players and referees. Coaches, front-office personnel, medical and equipment personnel, player development, team and arena security, social media team members, PR staffers, and scorer’s table personnel are all included.

It also covers any employees who will be working in close proximity to the court, such as broadcasters and photographers. Vaccination will be required for the back-of-house team as well as arena operations. The deadline for fully vaccinating team members is October 1.

The league is certainly expecting that there will be no occasion to postpone nearly as many games as it did last season, with the majority of players and virtually all club and arena officials immunised.
