October 14, (THEWILL) – Nigeria has withdrawn from the 2022 Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations due to a lack of funding to participate.

The Super Sand Eagles were placed in Group A with Morocco, Mozambique, and Malawi for the competition to be hosted by Mozambique, but are no longer participating, leaving just seven nations to slug it out on the sandy beaches.

The four teams in the only other pairing of Group B are Egypt, Uganda, Madagascar, and Senegal, the defending champion just as their compatriots are continental champions after their debut victory in the TotalEnergies 2022 Africa Cup of Nations.

The beach soccer competition is scheduled to begin at the Vilankulos Arena on October 21 with the final scheduled for October 28.

Nigeria’s withdrawal has further repercussions for the country’s team because the Mozambique tournament also functions as a world cup qualifying event, with teams that advance to the knockout round qualifying to represent Africa at the United Arab Emirates 2023 Beach Soccer World Cup.
