January 02, (THEWILL) – Newcastle United has indicated interest in signing Arsenal star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on loan with a purchase option.

Following his second disciplinary infraction of the season, the Gabonese international was excluded from manager Mikel Arteta’s plans earlier this month. He was stripped of his captaincy as a result and has not appeared in any of Arsenal’s last six games.

With Alexandre Lacazette stepping up upfront, Aubameyang’s absence has had a minimal effect on the team. In the wide attacking roles, Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka have shone brilliantly.

Although Arteta has stated that Aubameyang’s situation will be evaluated on a game-by-game basis, the Magpies are now interested in acquiring him.

The Tyneside club will propose a short-term loan with a £20 million buyout option next summer.

Aubameyang is now in Gabon, preparing to captain the Gabonese side to the African Cup of Nations which kicks off in Cameroon next week. If they advance past the group stage, he may be unavailable for the entire month of January.

The Gunners plan to review Aubameyang’s future when he returns, but it appears the Magpies are hoping to persuade them to sign him in the middle of the season.

The striker is no longer favoured by Arteta, and a relocation away from the Emirates is a possibility. However, this is not viable until the Gunners have a substitute in place, especially because Eddie Nketiah, just like Aubameyang, could leave soon.

The academy graduate’s contract is coming to an end in the next six months, and he has no plans to extend it. He might be available for a bargain transfer to raise funds for Arteta’s side.

But, in that situation, the Gunners would be left with Alexandre Lacazette as their lone senior striker and an injury might put their season in risk.

In other options available, Gabriel Martinelli can play up front, but his natural position is on the left flank, where he excels. Folarin Balogun is a relatively inexperienced player who has been tipped as a future star but requires some time to get there, while Arsenal’s needs are pressing.

As a result, unless a high-profile replacement is signed, Aubameyang will most definitely stay. Ollie Watkins is Arteta’s top target, although he may not be available in January.
