January 22, (THEWILL) – With a 1-0 win over Leeds United, Newcastle United increased their chances of staying in the Premier League. There were just 16 minutes remaining in regulation time when Jonjo Shelvey’s low driven free-kick beat Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier for the game’s only goal.
Leeds had the preponderance of possession throughout the game, but achieved little with it since Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka was scarcely tested.
Raphinha and Dan James gave it their all, but Leeds’ striker shortage was evident throughout. Shelvey, on the other hand, had kept Newcastle ticking over from his deep lying midfield role, and his dipping shot was turned wide by Meslier late in the first half.
However, the former England international was not to be denied, as Diego Llorente brought down Miguel Almiron on the edge of the box, giving him the chance to win the game.
Newcastle’s first win of 2022 came after Shelvey lined up the shot and curled it around the wall, with Meslier unable to do much but assist the ball into the net.
Newcastle’s chances of surviving are boosted, with more reinforcements expected before the end of the month. The Geordies do not have to begin their Saudi revolution with relegation to the Championship, it now appears.
