Newcastle Lead Pursuit Of Man Utd Keeper Henderson

March 22, (THEWILL) – Newcastle United are leading the drive to recruit Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson, who is willing to leave Old Trafford permanently.

Henderson has been unable to unseat David de Gea as United’s number one goalkeeper, and his future at the club appears to be in jeopardy as discussions with West Brom’s Sam Johnstone, who is available on a free transfer this summer, are scheduled.

Henderson’s hopes of establishing himself in goal are further hampered by the fact that De Gea is poised to sign a new long-term contract with the Red Devils.

In the January transfer window, Newcastle were anxious to bring Henderson to St James’ Park, and they are still leading the battle to sign him preferably on a permanent basis.

The Magpies have assured current number one Martin Dubravka that if the opportunity to leave arises this summer, they would not stand in his way. Once their stay in the Premier League is confirmed, they will move through with an offer for Henderson, who has been dropped from Gareth Southgate’s England squad due to a lack of minutes.

Second-choice keeper at Arsenal Bernd Leno remains a priority even if Newcastle believe that the 25-year-old Henderson is a better long-term option, having impressed during his previous loan spell at Sheffield United and brief tenure as Manchester United’s first choice.

Henderson’s likely exit might help ease discussions between United and former academy graduate Johnstone, who departed the club for West Brom in 2018 without making a senior appearance.

Following a successful 18-month loan spell at Aston Villa, Johnstone went on to make over 150 league games for the Baggies, earning a place in the England squad despite the club’s relegation to the Championship.

Johnstone, who is out of contract this summer, may now return to United as De Gea’s backup, allowing Henderson to leave for the regular first-team action he craves.
