SAN FRANCISCO, November 13, (THEWILL) – Victims of human trafficking rescued by the National Agency for Prohibition of Traffic in Persons and other Related Matters (NAPTI) in the North-east zone are to receive relief assistance from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
NEMA North-east Zonal Coordinator, Alhaji Mohammed Kanar, disclosed this when NAPTI officials led by the Head of Borno office, Mallam Shehu Umar, paid him a visit in his office.
“NEMA is ready to cooperate with any stakeholders on emergency situation. We are determined to partner with you and other stakeholders in disaster management and mitigation. Therefore, on behalf of NEMA Director General, Alhaji Sani Sidi, I assure you of our support,” he said, assuring that NEMA would continue to offer necessary support to victims of emergency situation and disaster.
Responding to the assurance, Borno State coordinator of NAPTI, Umar, explained that his visit was to explore partnership deal with NEMA to tackle the challenges faced by rescued persons and victims of human trafficking.
He disclosed that NAPTI has intensified its surveillances and intelligence on human trafficking in the area, saying it is seeking assistance from NEMA to assist trafficked persons.
Umar said the agency was saddled with the responsibility of arrest of traffickers, conduct investigation and counseling of trafficked persons as well as undertake researches and give orientation on the danger of human trafficking.
He also disclosed that 76 cases of human trafficking were recorded by the Borno office of NAPTI in three years, saying the agency has secured six conviction within the period.
“For the past three years, we have received 76 cases of human trafficking and we’ve been able to secure six conviction and rescued 178 persons in three year. We empowered 68 who are mostly persons women and children,” he said.
