December 10, (THEWILL) – Napoli beat Leicester City 3-2 in a high-octane game to win Group C and advance to the round of 16 as group leaders on Thursday.
In the fourth minute, Adam Ounas’ low drive broke the deadlock for the hosts, only seconds after Leicester lost a golden opportunity to open the scoring.
Leicester pushed forward in the quest of an equaliser, but were caught off guard as Elmas scored from close range in the 23rd minute.
Jonny Evans cut the deficit in half for Brendan Rodgers’ side in the 27th minute, and six minutes later academy graduate Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall wonderfully volleyed home the equaliser from the edge of the box.
Early in the second half, the Foxes were taken off guard as Elmas scored his second goal of the game to put Luciano Spalletti’s side back in the lead.
Despite the introduction of Patson Daka, Leicester were unable to get an equaliser, and Napoli deservedly won to qualify for the round of 16 in March, while Brendan Rodgers’ team will compete in the Europa Conference as a result of their third-place finish in the group.
