Nagelsmann Attacks Freiburg’s Complaints Over Bayern’s Substitution Error

April 05, (THEWILL) – With Bayern Munich’s substitution blunder threatening to cost them points, Julian Nagelsmann has launched a scathing attack on Freiburg.

After Freiburg complained to the German Football Association (DFB) about an incident late in their game, in which Bayern had 12 players on the field for a few seconds, there is a real possibility that Bayern Munich’s 4-1 win at Freiburg on Saturday can be overturned, cutting their nine-point lead over Borussia Dortmund to six.

Nagelsmann questioned how Freiburg could explain their complaint considering the emphatic result, and claimed that the Champions League-chasing side would have to look in the mirror if they qualified for Europe’s premier club competition based on three points from a game like this.

Bayern had a 3-1 lead when Nagelsmann substituted Marcel Sabitzer and Niklas Sule for Corentin Tolisso and Kingsley Coman.

Coman, on the other hand, was unaware that he was being substituted because his number was not raised, and he did not leave the pitch right away, with referee Christian Dingert resuming the game before the error was spotted.

The DFB will review the matter, and according to its rules, Freiburg might be awarded a 2-0 victory.

“In the end I’m not surprised, to be honest,” Nagelsmann said. “It is a procedure that lies with the DFB sports court. It has to make a judgement. In my opinion it can only go one way.

“From a personal point of view I don’t understand it. Freiburg would not have scored two goals in those 18 seconds.

“I personally wouldn’t have done it. I find that you are exploiting the mistakes of a third party to maybe score points yourself.

“I don’t know if you can pat yourself on the back with the sponsors at the AGM in November if you play internationally because of the three points you won, which you actually didn’t win in sporting terms.

“I wouldn’t be so happy if that were the case. I would have clearly communicated to the club that we would not appeal. In the end everyone has to decide for themselves.”

Nagelsmann delivered these comments to the media during Bayern’s pre-match press conference for the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Villarreal.

Nagelsmann would prefer to brush away the topic of the Freiburg game, given how undesirable it is as a distraction when so much is at stake.

Freiburg said they had sought an appeal despite their reservations, and detailed an “intensive and extremely differentiated process of deliberation” before proceeding.
