N2.7bn: Gov Ortom Decries Garnishee Order On Benue Accounts

August 04, (THEWILL) – Governor Samuel Ortom has decried the garnishee order on the accounts of the Benue state government, following a court order, even as he said there is no cause for alarm.

Briefing newsmen at the end of the Benue State Security Council Meeting (BSSCM), held at the Benue Peoples House, Makurdi, on Monday, Governor Ortom directed Secretary to the State Government and lawyers to study the court decision with the aim of filing an appeal at a higher court.

According to him, the council approved the sustenance of a ban on motorcycle operations in Sankera federal constituency consisting of Logo, Katsina-Ala and Ukum local government areas of the state.

He explained that given the rising security situation across the country, the Security Council also approved that motorcycle operations should start from 6:00 am and terminate by 8:00 pm across the state; warning that violators of the directives risk prosecution.

Governor Ortom said, henceforth, any heavy-duty truck covered with trampoline must be stopped and searched by security agents to ascertain the content of the load before allowing it to pass through to its destination.

He announced the setting up of a committee with Secretary to Benue State Government, Prof. Anthony Ijohor, as chairman, Special Adviser on Mining, Attorney General of the state, Commissioner for Land, Survey and Solid Minerals, council chairmen of Logo, Kwande and Gboko local government areas,, to look at the mining activities in the state.

“Although the Federal Government has the right to issue operating licences to operators, the state owns the land and it is our right to regulate and allow them, so as to tap from the opportunities that abound in Benue state.”

The Community Volunteer Guards security outfit, the governor announced will be inaugurated officially on Thursday, so as to complement regular security agents in the state, and will be equipped with kits and legal arms for their operations.

He re-emphasised the rejection of the federal government’s Water bill, pointing out that it was designed to take over residents’ natural resources.
