June 11, (THEWILL) – Andy Murray defeated Nick Kyrgios in straight sets at the Boss Open in Stuttgart and reached his first tour-level final on grass in six years.
Murray has played some of his best tennis in this competition, beating Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece in the quarter-finals on Friday, which marked his first victory against a top-five player since 2016, prior to his two hip surgeries.
The 35-year-old had a different task in the form of the unpredictable Kyrgios, but he won easily in the end, dominating the second set after edging a first-set tie-break. He began with a comfortable 4-1 lead with a second break of serve after Kyrgios incurred a game penalty for unsportsmanlike behaviour early in the second set.
In an amazing four-match streak in Stuttgart, the former world number one, now placed 68th, has failed to drop a set.
On Sunday, the three-time Grand Slam champion, who has reconnected with longtime mentor Ivan Lendl, with whom he won two Wimbledon titles, will compete in his 10th grass-court final – and 70th overall.
