July 17, (THEWILL) – In a preseason game played in Las Vegas, English Premier League side, Chelsea, opened its three-match U.S. tour with a convincing 2-1 victory against the formidable Club America of Mexico.
There were seven minutes left on the clock in regulation time when Mason Mount scored an incredible goal from outside the area to finish off the victory for the Blues. But, Thomas Tuchel’s side had found it difficult to crack open their Mexican opponents in the beginning.
Hakim Ziyech was a key player throughout as Tuchel started an attacking front line with Callum Hudson-Odoi, Kai Havertz, and Ziyech, but they were unable to score. Kenedy, the right back, launched a curling shot, and Thiago Silva fired a header toward goal, but the Guillermo Ochoa saved both shots.
That was until the English side opened the scoring on the hour mark when Timo Werner gave Chelsea a lead. Their lead was brief because Club America tied the score thanks to a Reece James backpass that turned into an own goal.
Mount assured Chelsea’s American fans went home cheering with his long-range strike for the winner. The Blues’ final matches in the United States are against London rivals Arsenal on July 23 and MLS club Charlotte FC on July 20 respectively.
