October 29, (THEWILL) – Monterrey has won the CONCACAF Champions League again after defeating Club America 1-0 in the final. For the fifth time, the trophy will be going to the Mexican professional football club based in Monterrey, Nuevo León.
At the Estadio BBVA in Guadalupe on Thursday, Rogelio Funes Mori was the hero, with his ninth-minute goal deciding the game against their fellow Liga MX side.
Sebastian Caceres, a defender for co-finalists Club America, fumbled a clearing in the penalty area, allowing Mori to score what became the game’s only goal.
With 10 minutes left in regulation time, former Tottenham striker Victor Janssen came close to extending Monterrey’s lead after rounding goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, but his shot was blocked off the line.
Incredibly, there were 15 minutes of stoppage time, and Club America came dangerously close to tying the game in the 101st minute when Federico Vinas rocked the crossbar in a goal-mouth melee.
However, Monterrey held on to their slim lead and managed to retain their Champions League title.
