November 22, (THEWILL) – The match between Lyon and Marseille in Ligue 1 has been called off after Dimitri Payet was hit by a water bottle thrown from the crowd.
After only five minutes of play at Groupama Stadium on Sunday, the referee paused the contest and took the two groups of players back to the dressing rooms.
The score was 0-0 after only five minutes of the Ligue 1 encounter between Lyon and Marseille, two of the top division’s biggest clubs.
This follows a Ligue 1 match between Angers and Marseille in September, where fans poured onto the pitch after a brawl in the stands.
THEWILL recalls that in another incident, Payet was also hit by a projectile during a match against Nice in August, and the former West Ham midfielder threw the object back into the crowd.
Payet was fined, along with a number of Marseille players and coaching staff, for their roles in the incident, while Nice was docked points.
