Masvidal To Face Charges After Allegedly Attacking Covington In Miami

March 22, (THEWILL) – After a clash between two UFC rivals late Monday night, details about Jorge Masvidal’s alleged attack on Colby Covington have started to surface.

Masvidal is named as a suspect in the incident, according to a report obtained by Miami Beach Police on Tuesday.

As Covington was the victim, his identity was censored, but many sources have confirmed that he was indeed the victim of the altercation outside of Papi Steak Restaurant.

Covington told officers that he was “attacked by Jorge Masvidal” when they arrived on the scene. Masvidal “ran up to him from his left and without notice punched him with a closed fist two times in the face”, Covington claimed.

Covington was punched in the mouth once, and his left eye was punched too, according to the report. During the attack, Covington overheard Masvidal say, “You shouldn’t have been talking about my kids.”

Covington went on to say that he spotted “three or four other unknown males” approaching him in an “aggressive manner,” so he pushed them away and ran “back into the Papi Steak restaurant, where he contacted police.”

According to the police complaint, Covington cracked his left front teeth and abrasion on his left wrist during the alleged assault. Masvidal was supposedly wearing a blue surgical face mask with his hoodie raised over his head, according to Covington, and he recognised him by the sound of his voice as well as his hair hanging out of his hoodie.

Police retrieved security camera footage from the event and interviewed with Covington and other witnesses, while wearing body cameras.

Late Monday night, Masvidal posted a video that appeared to refer to the altercation after it occurred.

“Call this the show your face challenge,” Masvidal said. “What’s up, I’m from Dade county. You talk that s*** you’ve got to back it up. That’s how my city rolls.”

He then responded with a tweet early Tuesday morning that appeared to refer to what he allegedly said to Covington during the altercation. He wrote: “Good morning to everyone except those that think talking about someone’s kids is cool.”

After their fight in the UFC 272 main event in early March, the situation between Masvidal and Covington became tense. Covington won the fight by unanimous decision, and in the days and weeks following the fight, he proceeded to mock Masvidal on social media.

Masvidal revealed at the UFC 272 post-fight news conference that he planned to settle his anger with Covington on the streets after the former UFC interim welterweight champion mentioned his children during the build-up to their battle.

“He’s still somebody that if I see him out in the streets, I’m going to give him everything I’ve got to break his f**** jaw,” Masvidal said. “It doesn’t matter if I lost wrestling scrambles tonight, I still think he’s a f***** p****, you know?”

Masvidal might face felony battery charges as a result of the incident, according to police reports. At this moment, no formal charges have been filed against Masvidal, and no arrests have been made.
