BEVERLY HILLS, May 27, (THEWILL) – After the disappointing season that Juventus had in the just concluded 2020/2021 campaign, which was only slightly improved in winning the Coppa Italia in May, it was left to the club management to risk accommodating a club icon and coach learning on the job for another season or bring in an accomplished manager.

Juventus may have settled for the latter as plans are afoot to appoint Massimiliano Allegri as their new manager to replace Andrea Pirlo, who may have seemed out of his depth against the tactical mastery of Antonio Conte at Inter, Stefano Pioli at Milan and even Gian Piero Gasperini at Atalanta.

Pirlo faces being fired on Thursday, which is longer than many observers thought he was going to last especially after the Old Lady was eliminated by Porto in the Champions League Round of 16 and they finished fourth in Serie A, fortunate that Victor Osimhen’s Napoli drew their final game.

His position could be handed over to the 56-year-old Allegri, who left his managerial position in Juventus in 2019 and has not returned to management since. His productive successes in Serie A with the club led to four Coppa Italia, two Supercoppa Italiana, five consecutive Serie A titles, as well as two Champions League finals.

Allegri will be tasked with addressing Juve’s struggles in Serie A under Pirlo which led to losing grounds to the Milan clubs with their fourth finish that placed Atalanta above them in the final league standings as they needed good fortune to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Although in the revived El Clasico clash between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, Juve gained the upper hand with a summary 3-0 execution of Barcelona in Spain to top Champions League Group G, their European journey came off the rails as they crashed out on away goals to Porto in Round 16 knockout stages.
