June 23, (THEWILL) – Due to alleged criminal negligence in the passing of national hero and football legend, Diego Maradona, eight medical professionals are currently being tried in Argentina.

The football community was thrown into mourning when Maradona passed suddenly in November, 2020, from a heart attack. As THEWILL reported, the football legend passed away soon after having surgery to remove a blood clot from his brain.

A judge has now ordered a “culpable homicide” trial, as a result of alleged “deficiencies and irregularities” in his treatment that a medical panel discovered. Prosecutors almost immediately launched an investigation into the doctors and nurses responsible for his care. After his surgery, Maradona was permitted to recover at home under care.

A panel of 20 experts came to the conclusion that his medical staff had behaved in an “inappropriate, deficient, and reckless manner.” Additionally, it was discovered that at a suitable medical facility, his chances of survival would have been higher. Leopoldo Luque, Maradona’s personal physician, is on trial along with his neurosurgeon, two other physicians, two nurses, a psychiatrist, and a psychologist.

Such a felony carries a prison penalty of eight to 25 years in Argentina, depending on the severity of the conviction. All eight have said they are not to blame for Maradona’s passing. The World Cup legend’s daughters initially filed the lawsuit, according to a lawyer for one of Maradona’s sons, who claims he “said it was homicide” from the outset.
