September 28, (THEWILL) – Many were feared killed on Tuesday, when security operatives opened fire on members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), also known as the Shiites, who staged their annual Arbaeen Trek along the Third Avenue, Gwarimpa District of Abuja.

THEWILL reports that the armed men who came in security patrol vans stormed the area and launched an attack on the Shiite members.

One anonymous source told reporters that the operatives killed about eight people, including innocent passersby caught in the shooting incident.

He narrated: “It was around 8:00 am when we started hearing gunshots along the road. The shooting lasted about 10 minutes.

”But after the shooting, the gunmen appeared to have succeeded in thoroughly dispersing the Arbaeen trekkers.

“I can’t say how many people were killed. But the corpses we have counted were eight. What I can tell you is that up to eight people were killed in the incident.

”Some of the passersby who had nothing to do with the Shiite may have also fallen victim.”

It took the intervention of men of the FCT police command to clear the road, as the incident led to heavy traffic that blocked the Kubwa Expressway and left vehicles and commuters stranded.

Meanwhile, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, said a statement on the attack would be released shortly.
