Man Utd Poor Form Piles Pressure On Solskjaer, But Club Board Support Remains

October 17, (THEWILL) – Despite a poor run of results that culminated in a 4-2 defeat at Leicester City on Saturday, Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will not be fired.

Even though the 13-time Premier League champions have not won any of their previous three league games despite spending heavily in the summer, the United manager still has support at the board level.

United is now in fifth place, one point outside the top four, following Saturday’s loss. In their Champions League group, they have one win and one loss.

However, as THEWILL reported, they have a difficult run ahead of them, with Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, and Arsenal among their next nine league opponents.

In December 2018, Solskjaer was appointed as a caretaker manager at United, before being appointed permanently the following spring. In July 2021, the 48-year-old signed a new three-year contract with the option to extend for another year, ensuring that he will remain at the club until at least 2024.

In his post-match comments the Red Devils’ manager said: “When you look at the game after, the four goals we conceded were poor. The way we played we don’t deserve to continue that (away unbeaten) run.

“I pick the team, Harry Maguire showed no reaction and I hold my hand up if that does not work out. If we concede four, I probably made a bad decision. Lately we have not been in great form, lost too many points and that is something we have to look at. We might have to change, do we need more legs in there? What do we need?

“I have got many good players. Fred, Edinson Cavani, you miss them. I am not making excuses for the team I put out there, they are top footballers and we have not produced. It says everything our best player was David but we still conceded four goals.

“We have to dust ourselves off. Make sure that when we come in again, freshen our minds, we’ve looked ourselves in the mirror, I’ve looked myself in the mirror, and make sure we perform. That is the nature of football, you have to respond to set-backs.”

United spent around £130 million on Jadon Sancho, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Raphael Varane during the summer transfer window.

But, United have been in similar circumstances before. In January, the Manchester club went into their match against Sheffield United with an unbeaten run of 13 league matches. But the 2-1 defeat they suffered as the hands of the EPL bottom side started an eight-match run in which United dropped 13 points from a possible 24.

And, although United were able to hold on to second place, they finished 12 points behind city rivals and title winners Manchester City. This time around, the noose may begin to tighten around Solskjaer’s neck the sooner the fans lose their patience.

Unless the results in the very tough upcoming fixtures at home and in Europe change positively for the Old Trafford side, the weight of the Board support might not be enough to help the Norwegian retain his position in the United dugout.
