September 04, (THEWILL) – Manchester United defeated Arsenal 3-1 at Old Trafford to end the Gunners’ perfect start to the season with a Marcus Rashford brace and a debut goal from Antony.
Three days after completing his transfer from Ajax, Antony was given the opportunity to make his United debut, and after a Gabriel Martinelli goal was chalked off by yet another contentious VAR decision, United took the lead in the first half through Antony.
However, on the hour mark, Bukayo Saka gave Arsenal a justifiable equaliser, but Rashford sealed United’s victory by capping off two powerful counterattacks.
Arsenal had the majority of the ball in the minutes that followed, but ultimately it did not matter because they could not find the net and, therefore, lost for the first time this season while the resurgent Red Devils closed the gap on them by three points.
Both teams will play their next match in European competition after a usually tough domestic match: Arsenal will go to Zurich for their opening Europa League match, while a confident United welcome Real Sociedad to Old Trafford.
