May 26, (THEWILL) – Manchester United’s new chairman, John Murtough, has confirmed that manager Erik ten Hag was the “standout choice” to lead the club.
THEWILL recalls that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was fired late last year, and German gaffer Ralf Rangnick was named as his replacement. With ten Hag now in charge, Rangnick will revert to consultancy.
Ten Hag is charged with turning around the fortunes of the Old Trafford club after one of United’s poorest campaigns in history. They finished sixth in the English Premier League with 58 points and zero goal difference.
Murtough said Ten Hag had a “long-term vision to build a successful, exciting team” and was the candidate “most closely aligned with the identity and aims of Manchester United” during a fans’ forum the week before he was presented.
Murtough also added: “He showed passion, energy and enthusiasm for the challenge.”
