July 31, (THEWILL) – Benni McCarthy has officially joined Erik ten Hag’s backroom staff at Manchester United as the first-team coach ahead of the upcoming campaign.
The former striker, a lifelong United supporter who also played for Porto, Ajax, Blackburn Rovers, and West Ham, has joined the club to take charge of attacking plays and positioning responsibilities.
McCarthy formerly served as the head coach of the South African team AmaZulu, however he resigned from that role in March after leading the team to a league-record second place finish. As a result, he was selected Coach of the Season for the 2020/2021 South African Premier League season.
Speaking to the club’s official website after the decision was made public, McCarthy remarked: “I support Man United and always wanted to play for them. I loved players like Mark Hughes, Andy Cole and Ryan Giggs.”
With McCarthy’s hiring, Ten Hag’s backroom staff is complete ahead of his first season in command at Old Trafford. The 44-year-old joins other staff members like Mitchell van der Gaag, Steve McLaren, Eric Ramsay, and Darren Fletcher in Ten Hag’s backroom.
