Man U Fans Continue Protests Prior To Match Rescheduled Over Protests

BEVERLY HILLS, May 13, (THEWILL) – For the second time, protesting fans of the English Premier League side Manchester United are interfering with a rescheduled fixture between their club and last season’s EPL champions Liverpool. This time, they blocked off the team bus of the visitors as it made its way to the team hotel ahead of the postponed tie with United.

THEWILL recalls the match of today was originally scheduled to be played on Sunday, May 2 but had to be postponed by the English FA as protesting United fans forcefully gained entrance onto the Old Trafford grounds as fans continued to demonstrate over the Super League and the Glazer’s handling of the club.

In anticipation of more trouble, THEWILL reported that security was doubled and stronger barriers were brought in to hold back protesters, who were planning to continue their civil disobedience to get their message across. These demonstrations have been planned to further disrupt the rearranged game as fans gathered on Sir Matt Busby Way, blocked the Liverpool bus and deflated its tyres.

It took the arrival of the police to clear the blockage and get the bus mobile again and on its way. The police also ensured that it arrived without further events by providing an escort all the way to the team hotel.

It is reminiscent of the protests of May 2 that forced this Thursday fixture into a packed schedule for United. The swelling crowd is already outside the Old Trafford stadium turning the Theatre of Dreams to a scene of demonstrations, a few hours before the 8:15pm kickoff of the tie.

It will be unfortunate for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side if they are made to endure another rescheduling for the safety of the players and crew of both sides. In addition, while the hosts, who are second in the EPL standings, have secured qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League, Liverpool is still involved in a late chase for a top-four slot and this match is crucial for the visitors.

For the fans, they are unprepared to be silenced and want to do what they can to be heard. Although the Glazer family have reached out to the United fan base in a bid to build bridges following their committal to join the breakaway league, it seems it is going to take much more than an open letter from Joel Glazer to repair the damage that has been done.
