Mali Qualify Top Of Group F After 2-0 Win Over Mauritania

January 21, (THEWILL) – On Thursday night, Mali triumphed 2-0 over Mauritania in their last group match to take top spot in Group F at the TotalEnergies 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Eagles only needed to beat Gambia’s result to take the lead in the standings, and they achieved that against Mauritania as Gambia only managed a 1-0 victory over Tunisia.

Mali, on the other hand, was already through, and there was little danger even before Massadio Haidara’s second-minute opener – the tournament’s earliest goal so far.

When Moussa Doumbia tapped a right-wing cross into his path, the Lens left-back scored his first international goal.

Although Ibrahima Kone’s penalty was ultimately necessary to surpass Gambia in the group standings, the forward thumping in following a foolish tackle on Doumbia early in the second half, Mauritania appeared incapable of generating any kind of comeback.

The Mauritanians therefore exit the tournament with little less than a whimper having endured three losses, conceded seven goals, scored none and permanently stuck at the base of Group F the entire time.
