SAN FRANCISCO, May 11, (THEWILL) – Algeria striker, Riyad Mahrez, has said the African Cup of Nations should be held every four years arguing that it would bring more respect to African football.
THEWILL reports that current FIFA President, Gianni Infantino, had also proposed that the AFCON should be held every four years “to “project African football to the top of the world”.
Infantino added: “The Africa Cup of Nations generates twenty times less than the Euros. Having a the championship every two years, is that good at the commercial level? Has this developed the infrastructure? Think about spending it every four years.”

Mahrez, who was part of the Algerian team that won the last AFCON, has supported the Infantino’s proposal.
He said: “We should have the African Cup every 4 years in the summer.
“It was great in Egypt, not too hot. Having it every 2 years and in the winter is the reason why African football is not respected. There’s a lot of competition when you leave your club for 2 months.”
THEWILL reports the next African Cup of Nations championship is billed for Cameroon in 2021.
