July 29, (THEWILL) – Ahead of the 2022/2023 season, Joe Gomez has changed his Liverpool team number and offered to replace all jerseys purchased with his old number on them.
The defender has worn number 12 since joining Liverpool from Charlton Athletic in 2015, but has found it harder to play at his preferred center-back position in recent seasons due to injury and the form of Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, and Ibrahima Konate.
The new campaign, which for Liverpool begins on Saturday, when they play the English Premier League winners Manchester City in the Community Shield, features the 25-year-old England international taking the number two shirt.
The switch may indicate that Gomez will have to settle for backing up Trent Alexander-Arnold once again in the upcoming season, despite the fact that Liverpool has also signed promising youngster Calvin Ramsey from Aberdeen.
Gomez offered to personally compensate everybody who had purchased a 2022–23 replica shirt with the inscription “Gomez 12,” according to a club statement.
