Liverpool Qualify For UCL Final With Remarkable Comeback Against Villarreal

May 04, (THEWILL) – A thrilling 3-2 victory over 10-man Villarreal that saw Sadio Mane scoring the game-winning goal, allowed Liverpool come back from two goals down to seal their spot in the 2022 UEFA Champions League final.

In the 74th minute, the Senegalese striker scored his 21st goal of the season, capping a spectacular comeback for Liverpool after Unai Emery’s side threatened a stunning recovery from the 2-0 first-leg setback at Anfield.

Boulaye Dia scooped in his first ever Champions League goal from close range after Etienne Capoue blasted a left-wing cross back into his path only three minutes after the game began.

In a fragmented first half, Liverpool’s defence was repeatedly breached, and Villarreal deservedly levelled the aggregate four minutes before the break when Francis Coquelin, a former Arsenal midfielder, smashed a magnificent header into the top corner.

The Merseysiders were in desperate need of a goal and got that prayer answered when they went 3-2 up on aggregate with a Fabinho equaliser just after the hour.

A wonderful header from substitute Luis Diaz tied it 2-2 on the night, before Mane secured a 5-2 victory on aggregate with the 139th goal of Liverpool’s season, their most in a single campaign.

Villarreal’s misery worsened when Capoue was sent off for a second bookable offence, and Liverpool breezed through the last five minutes to set up a final meeting in Paris on May 28 with either Manchester City or Real Madrid.

It is Klopp’s third final of the season, with the Reds having lost just three times in all competitions this season, with their quest for immortality still on track as club football enters a crucial month that will determine the unprecedented quadruple that the Reds are chasing.

That pursuit now shifts back to the English Premier League title fight, with a match against UCL-chasing Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday night. On Sunday, Villarreal will play third-placed Sevilla in La Liga.
