July 28, (THEWILL) – Liverpool’s preseason campaign came to an end with a 1-0 loss to Red Bull Salzburg in Austria, as Manchester United transfer target, Benjamin Sesko, scored the game’s lone goal.
The Reds were frustrated by their hosts in the first half of their final game before Saturday’s Community Shield opener against Manchester City, and despite being given numerous chances in the second, they were unable to breach the defenses that Salzburg put up.
Darwin Nunez displayed glimmers of the form that saw him score a second-half hat-trick in their previous match in the first half, but he was unable to break through.
Sesko gave their hosts a 1-0 lead just minutes after Fernando squandered a golden opportunity for Salzburg, making Liverpool pay for their lack of a cutting edge. The talented young forward calmly finished off an excellent team play into the bottom corner.
Eight minutes from time, Liverpool’s Luis Diaz managed to score but he was offside. Trent Alexander-Arnold fired a beautifully struck effort on goal as Liverpool continued to press for an equaliser, forcing Mantl to make another fantastic save. Salzburg then held on for an encouraging victory in the end.
