December 15, (THEWILL) – On Wednesday, the Prince of Wales presented Sir Lewis Hamilton with his knighthood at Windsor Castle.
After matching Michael Schumacher’s legendary record with his seventh Formula One World Championship, the 36-year-old was knighted and given the title in the 2021 New Year Honours list.
A nail-biting finish to the F1 season in Abu Dhabi this year saw the Mercedes’ driver miss out on a record eighth title, with Max Verstappen taking the title for the first time, as THEWILL reported. However, Hamilton will return in 2022 with new teammate George Russell to attempt another push towards breaking the record.
The Silver Arrows did, however, win the manufacturers’ title for the eighth consecutive time, with Hamilton finishing second and Valtteri Bottas sixth to Verstappen on Sunday.
Hamilton was joined by his mother Carmen at Windsor Castle, where she witnessed her son become the fourth Formula One driver to be knighted, following Sir Jackie Stewart, Sir Stirling Moss, and Sir Jack Brabham.
Hamilton will also be in Paris on Thursday for the FIA Prize Giving Ceremony, where he will be joined by the newly crowned champion, Verstappen, who wasted no time in changing his car number to reflect his new status as F1 numero uno.
