April 09, (THEWILL) – With a scorching performance at the Australian Grand Prix, Charles Leclerc, secured his second pole position of the season and a first for Ferrari at Melbourne after 15 years.
The Ferrari was fastest in second practice at Albert Park, clocking a 1:17:868, with Red Bull combo Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez unable to match the in-form Monégasque driver in Melbourne.
Lando Norris of McLaren finished fourth, ahead of Lewis Hamilton, who was slightly under a second behind pole-sitter Leclerc.
Meanwhile, a mistake on his final flying lap dropped Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz to ninth place on the grid.
Daniel Ricciardo finished seventh, one spot behind George Russell, in a qualifying session that was red-flagged twice.
On Friday, Leclerc established the pace in the second practice at Albert Park, making his intentions for the Australian Grand Prix very clear.
With a time of 1:18:978, the 24-year-old Monégasque knocked off early-season opponent Verstappen by +0.245s, with the second Ferrari of Carlos Sainz, who was fastest in practice one, not far behind in third.
