October 03, (THEWILL) – In the main event of the European Welterweight bout, David “Ava” Avanesyan was in fine form, in defending his Welterweight Championship with a second-round finish of Liam Taylor, ending the Manchester fighter’s 13-fight winning run.

Ironically, Taylor, with a former professional boxing record of 23 wins (11 by knockouts) and two draws, was partly to blame for the bout’s early conclusion, as his aggressive style set the tone for the fight and prompted Avanesyan to instantly shift up several gears in reaction.

Avanesyan, whose boxing record now stands at 28 wins (16 by KOs), three draws and one loss, immediately saw the angles every Taylor attack opened up and threw massive counters through the uncovered channels, putting on a show that mixed animal aggression with clinical calculation to his advantage.

The bout was clearly not going to the distance after a first-round knockdown of the challenger. But, even though Taylor recovered, his time was running out. In the second round, Avanesyan poured on the pressure, slamming hard hooks into Taylor’s defences, stabbing him and forcing the referee to intervene and stop the fight.

In his post-fight interview, Avanesyan called for world title prospects after completing his fourth successful defence of his belt insisting that he was more than ready based on his performance on the night.

As THEWILL reported on Saturday, big-hitting Shepherd’s Bush cruiserweight Mikael Lawal (14-0, 8 KOs) kicked off the undercard against Switzerland’s Benoit Huber (7-2, 5 KOs), whom he stopped in the third round. Lawal, who had been out of the ring for a year, was looking for a knockout as he prepares to fight for a title in his next bout. And, that was what he got in the third round.

Linus Udofia (17-0, 9 KOs) of Luton also stopped Xhuljo Vrenozi (17-4, 4 KOs) in the third round and, very much like Lawal, is targeting a title battle in his next fight. Udofia’s hard-hitting style injured Vrenozi several times until the Albanian’s corner threw in the towel.

In the other bouts, Joe Pigford (18-0, 17 KOs) continued his remarkable stoppage rate with another early finish, ending Isaac Aryee’s (26-10, 24 KOs) night in the fifth round and retaining his KO ratio of 94 percent.

Meanwhile, Richard Riakporhe (12-0, 8 KOs) of Walworth was in command throughout, dropping Krzysztof Twardowski (9-3, 6 KOs) in the eighth round with a huge overhand right, even though the Pole got up and finished the fight.

After suffering a hand injury and recovering from surgery, Riakporhe just returned to competitive boxing after nearly two years away. The 31-year-old will fight for the WBC Silver Cruiserweight title against Olanrewaju Duodola on November 20 at Wembley in a big BOXXER bout.

Also, Germaine Brown (10-0, 3 KOs) of Kingston defeated Jamal Le Doux (8-2, 4 KOs) but had to work hard for the victory and will now look forward to a crack at the English title after surviving the Eliminator. Brown used his whole skill set to defeat Le Doux, winning nearly every bout.
