November 29, (THEWILL) – Real Madrid stayed atop La Liga with a 2-1 victory over Sevilla, thanks to a spectacular late winner from Vinicius Junior to the wild cheers of fans packed into the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday night.

Julen Lopetegui’s team travelled to Madrid knowing that a win would put them ahead of Los Blancos, but the Andalusians were unable to take advantage of their chances.

The visitors got off to a good start, and Mir raced away from his man at a corner kick to create room for himself to power a header past Thibaut Courtois after only 12 minutes.

As the home supporters inside the Santiago Bernabeu screamed their anger with their team’s performance, Mir had one shot cleared off the line and another one saved by Courtois.

Sevilla pressed on and came close to getting a second when Lucas Ocampos’ drive from just beyond the Real Madrid penalty box hit the crossbar.

Just after the half-hour mark, though, the home club secured an equaliser against the run of play, when star forward Karim Benzema pounced on a mishandled shot by Sevilla goalkeeper Bono.

With Eduardo Camavinga and Fede Valverde coming off the bench in the second half, Real Madrid grew exhausted, but it was Vinicius who dealt the decisive blow with a brilliant move and finish from the edge of the box.

Sevilla dominated for extended stretches of the game and could have had a three-goal lead in the first half alone if they could convert the chances that came. The result became their punishment for failing to take those chances and for stepping off Real Madrid in the second half.

Real will get La Liga action going again on Wednesday when they face Athletic Bilbao. Sevilla has a Copa del Rey match against Cordoba on the same day, ahead of a weekend fixture against Villarreal.
