September 08, (THEWILL) – A pro-democracy and human rights organization, Campaign for Dignity in Governance (CDG), has expressed its backing for the decision of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu to stay neutral in the process of selecting the suitable Vice Chancellor for the state owned University, the Lagos State University (LASU), located at Ojo area of the state.

Co-Convener of the CDG, Titi Akosa, in a chat in Lagos Wednesday said, the organization is backing the governor on his stand because it is in conformity with the spirit of democracy and human right principles, reminding that, “as a credible leader who still wants to remain credible, the step he has taken was the best expected of him.”

Speaking further, the woman activist said, Sanwo-Olu’s stand on the matter has shown him as an unbiased leader, who trusts his subordinates can handle issues perfectly, adding that, “since he has put some people into a selection committee, what is expected of him is to sit back and wait for result which he is already doing.”

With his declaration to stay neutral, Akosa said whoever emerges from the process would be accepted by other contenders and the public at large, asserting that the winner would thereafter enjoy the support and cooperation of his colleagues, the university community and the students population.

Akosa volunteered the comments at the heel of the reported statement of the governor declaring that, he would not interfere with the on-going selection process that would lead to the appointment of the substantive Vice Chancellor of the state-owned Lagos State University (LASU), adding that, he does not have personal interest in who becomes the next Vice Chancellor of LASU and therefore has no intention to influence the process and that due process would be followed in the appointment.

His words: “The process for the appointment of the substantive Vice Chancellor of the Lagos State University (LASU) is on-going and I can assure you that all the laws and due process that would lead to the appointment of the vice chancellor would be fully adhered to.

“I have no intention to interfere or have any interest in the choice of who would be vice chancellor. We have put in the committee men and women of impeccable character that have distinguished themselves and are willing to do a good job,” he was reported to have said.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, who promised adequate and continuous funding for state-owned tertiary institutions in Lagos State, said plans were in top gear to establish two additional universities of technology and education in the state.
