BEVERLY HILLS, February 20, (THEWILL) – Third seed Naomi Osaka played an inspired game as she raced to clinch a win in the final of the 2021 Australian Open. The Japanese triumphed in straight sets against her American co-finalist Jennifer Brady 6-4 6-3.

What may not be immediately obvious from the results is how fiercely contested the opening set was. However, by the second set, the competitive edge was on Osaka’s side as she further secured her status as the best player in the world currently.

The 23-year-old, who won the Australian Open in 2019, never looked overly troubled as she progressed steadily to a second Melbourne crown and her fourth Grand Slam overall in just one hour and 17 minutes. The world’s number three was too much for the American to handle.

Brady was appearing in her maiden Grand Slam final and she did produce some quite brilliant play at times, particularly in the opening set, to give the world an inkling of what to expect from her as her professional career blossoms from how far she came Down Under.

There was a standing ovation from the returning crowds, who were allowed back to the stands after the snap coronavirus restrictions the previous week, when, at 4-4 and 30-30, Brady came up with a spectacular lob to stun Osaka. It was her crowning moment of that first set, a set in which there was not much to separate both finalists.

These moments of brilliant play ensured that it remained an intriguing battle to the thrill and excitement of the crowd. Brady will leave the tournament with head held high for holding her own in the first set as she unrelentingly bombarded her opponent with her trademark huge forehands throughout.

Yet, Osaka inched ahead because she was simply the more clinical and, when it really mattered, stepped up her intensity and won the crucial points to carry the set. A decisive break, aided by two fortunate plays in succession, enabled the third seed to close out the opening set.

The second set was where Osaka set the pace and it quickly began to look bleak for Brady. It did not take off well with two serve losses for Brady to mark a nightmare start that dovetailed to an Osaka commanding lead of 4-0. Though Brady fought back admirably to break Osaka back, the Japanese was never going to concede her lead. Osaka took control of the match and dominated to see out the set.

Her four titles at 23, added to the amazing tennis she regularly displays at the best times merit Osaka the plaudits tennis fans have showered on her, unmistakably christening her the “new boss of women’s tennis.”
