Isner Knocks Murray Out Of Wimbledon Second Round

June 30, (THEWILL) – Andy Murray lost in four sets to John Isner on Centre Court in the second round, marking his quickest elimination from Wimbledon.

Murray, a two-time champion who had never lost at the All England Club before the third round, was unable to overcome Isner’s strong serving performance as he lost 6-4 7-6(4) 6-7(3) 6-4 and

Isner made 73% of his first serves and finished with 36 aces. Murray missed both of his break-point opportunities, while he converted two of his three opportunities.

Despite the fact that Isner made the 2018 Wimbledon semifinals and boasts one of the largest serves in the game, Murray was expected to win this match. He had defeated Isner eight times before without losing, and as one of the best returners in the competition, he was frequently able to break his opponent’s big serve.

But Isner set the tone right away, breaking Murray’s serve in the very third game of the first set as he attempted to attack it and forcing the pivotal error with a powerful return. From that point, Isner never really looked back and was able to push Murray into losing points although the second and third sets. The match was decided by such tight margins following a stunning performance from Isner, who will next play Italian up-and-comer Jannik Sinner.
