SAN FRANCISCO, March 06, (THEWILL) – Acting President Yemi Osinbajo has declared that the time has come for the international community to take another look at the international legal instruments and conventions governing warfare and conflicts because of the very unconventional and brutal operations of terrorists and insurgents around the globe.

In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, Osinbajo made the remark during a meeting with members of the United Nations Security Council at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

“We must, on a global scale look again at how to deal with these new challenges,” he said.

“We need to look at the governing conventions, what type of legal categories, and recognition of law we should give them (to the perpetrators of terror and insurgents).

“We need to re-examine how to deal with these individuals according to law.”

He assured the UN delegation that the Nigerian government will progressively review the rules of engagement by the military, the nation’s security system, and take into considerations human rights issues.

Osinbajo also revealed that the Federal Government under its Social Investment Programmes including the Conditional Cash Transfer, the GEEP Micro Credit Scheme and the N-Power job programme will cater for the developmental needs of the Northeast part of the country affected by the insurgency.

“We are already disbursing the cash transfers in some IDP camps and host communities.”

According to him, the Buhari administration is also implementing a microcredit scheme by trying to use the Social Investment Programmes to resuscitate the local economies.

The Security Council Visiting Mission had visited Maiduguri, Borno State before proceeding to Abuja to meet with Osinbajo.

Matt Moody, the Spokesperson and Head of Communications, UK Mission to the UN, says the Security Council were at Maiduguri, Nigeria, to meet local officials, journalists and civil society organisations before visiting an IDP camp.

The delegation is led by Amb. Matthew Rycroft, UK Permanent Representative to the UN and the Security Council’s President for the month of March.
